Zazen

“Zazen is a practice in meditation, an element of Zen Buddhism, and is performed while sitting. The sessions vary in length from one hour, to three days (seshin) and eight days (rohatsu)”. (Source: San Diego Aikikai).

Zazen posture can vary depending on the flexibility of the practitioner. Full lotus is the recommended position, but is not always possible. Cross-legged (Burmese) or even Seiza are also acceptable. Knees should touch the floor, forming thus along with the sitting bones a stable triangular base.

The spine should be upright, shoulders relaxed and the head resting on the top of the spine with the chin slightly tucked-in. Zazen practice consists of trying to keep as still as possible, both mentally and physically.
